THE TALENT // DALLIN JAMES

Hiro Clark is inspired by creative people that make our hometown buzz. THE TALENT is our program to show off local legends and undiscovered superstars.

Actors, writers, directors, photographers and all the rest of our creatives – come along as we see the other side of L.A. through their eyes.

Dallin James is a Los Angeles based Celebrity Hairdresser and Groomer. He does it all from kitchen cuts to red carpets and everything in between.

Where did your story with L.A. begin?

Well, it started way back when I was a kid and wanted to get the hell out of Utah. The only options in my head were either LA or NYC. Because LA was so close to Utah, I didn’t want anything to do with it, so NYC it was. After spending the better part of a decade there, I sowed all my broke-bohemian-“Rent”-fashion fantasies and got tired of the rat race. I started coming out to LA for work. It only took a few trips to realize, “oh, maybe I should have been here the whole time.” So I quickly found an LA boyfriend, packed up my tiny railroad apartment, and the rest is history as they say.

What’s your favorite movie about L.A.?

Hands down Clueless. Whenever I’m navigating the main surface streets of LA, I can never not think about that scene after the “Val” party when they are trying to decide who is gonna ride with who.

What’s your favorite soundtrack for cruising down PCH?

I got really into the history of Joni Mitchell in Laurel Canyon when I first moved here. I feel like driving down the PCH with the windows down and Joni on is always a solid choice.

Where do you disappear to when it’s time to skip town?

That’s the great thing about LA, there so much just a few hours drive away. If I had to choose where I frequent the most, it would be Two Bunch Palms in Desert Hot Springs.

What’s your go-to for the midnight munchies?

Any flavor of Jeni’s Ice cream.

Who’s your biggest L.A. icon?

Cher Horowitz

What’s your fave Hiro Clark go-to?

I recently got the No Sleeve Hooded and The Jogger as a set and I haven’t taken it off since.

Who would you invite to dinner at El Coyote?

Probably my boyfriend because I have yet to take him there.

Beach, mountains, or desert?

All of them.

It’s sunrise: are you more likely to be getting up early or finally going to bed?

Getting up early. Either on my own to hit the gym first thing or ‘cause I have an early call time.

Who was your first Hollywood crush?

He’s not so much Hollywood, but Danny from The Real World: New Orleans pretty much sealed the deal on this closeted little gay boy.

What’s the wildest thing that’s ever happened to you on set?

I was once given hair and makeup direction for my client for a presentation at The Met Costume Institute by Anna Wintour herself.

What are your tips for keeping your skin and hair ready for the Cali sun and surf?

Drink lots of water, wear SPF you love but not just one application, maintain a schedule to reapply, put a leave-in or mask in your hair before heading to the beach.
